Physical Education
Physical education is vital to everyday life, effecting both the physiological and psychological aspects of the body. Sport helps to reduce stress, improves mental health, helps manage weight, improves confidence, helps engage the brain ready for learning and many more positive attributes.
Physical Education at Woodlands provides students with the knowledge and understanding of how to live a healthy, active lifestyle, enabling them to make informed choices about their own physical development.
Students get to learn about sport in a variety of ways, the first being practical lessons, where they actively engage and take part in a range of sports, improving on their fundamental movement skills. Every student gets the chance to coach their peers, helping the students to improve their leadership qualities such as confidence and communication, as well as helping them gaining experience in sports coaching. Students will also learn how to use analysis software to improve their own and other people’s performances and evaluate the results.
At Woodlands we cover a range of different sports to help the students become an all-rounded athlete and have more fun. The students take part in both team and individual sporting activities, these include: Fitness, football, badminton, squash, tennis, tag rugby, gaelic football, orienteering, dodgeball, basketball, American football, athletics, cricket and more. The aim is engaging the students in activities that they want to do, giving them the skills and confidence to keep engaging in sports outside of school and after they have left Woodlands.
“I like being able to go outside and kick a ball around. I like it when we play matches between everyone and as a Woodlands team.”

"I chose to take AS PE – I enjoy the practical side because I have control over my lessons, and I am gaining confidence in coaching/leadership.”
Another way in which the students can learn sports is through theory lessons. Woodlands offers multiple opportunities for the students to gain qualifications. From ADSAN short courses (Health and Fitness and football); to other qualifications like BTEC Sports level 2, GCSE PE (short and full course) and BTEC Sports Level 3 (equivalent to 2 A levels). The theory lessons are planned for each student, meaning we working to their strengths and perform theory tasks in a practical way. This enables them to gain the best qualifications they can and develop skills for future employment.
Woodlands also offers extra-curricular activities and challenges such as the Woodlands football team, basketball, cricket and dodgeball in-house tournaments and afterschool clubs such as running club and social skills before school on set days. We are always open to start new activities when requested. Some challenges include monthly sports challenges, where students to try beat the p.e teacher in multiple sports challenges to win house points for their house.
